Red Wings Roster

In years past the Detroit Red Wings roster has contained some of the greatest names in NHL history. Some of the legendary players who have worn the winged wheel logo of the franchise include some of the greatest stars in professional hockey history. There was goaltender Terry Sawchuck, one of the toughest men ever to play the game and one of the best as well. He won 447 games during his career, a record upon his retirement, and remains the holder of the mark for most shutouts by a goalie with 103. There was left winger Ted Lindsay, a nine-time NHL All-Star who scored 426 goals and had 521 assists in just over 1200 career games. And who could forget "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe? Howe was a 23-time NHL All-Star as well as a six-time winner of both the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies. He retired with more than 20 professional hockey records to his name, and still holds NHL marks for most games and seasons played.

Steve Yzerman: A Notable Name on the Red Wings Roster

Of all of the men currently on the Red Wings roster, it is the team's captain, Steve Yzerman, who is closest to joining the elite company of Howe, Lindsay and Sawchuck. Yzerman has played in more than 1,400 games during his 21 seasons in the NHL, and every single one of them has been as a Red Wing. His 1,043 career assists are a franchise record, and his 1,721 total points entering the 2005-06 campaign are sixth all-time. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and one of just three NHL players to win both the Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal in the same year. Yzerman is a 10-time All-Star, a former Rookie of the Year, and in 1986 he became the youngest Detroit team captain in history. He has worn the 'C' on his jersey ever since. Despite his long and illustrious career, Yzerman recently decided to return for another season with the Red Wings, which is most assuredly good news for hockey fans in Michigan.
